2002: Safeco Field
Take me out to the ball game...Take me out with the crowd...1
For nearly a century, baseball enthusiasts have sung these words in anticipation of nine innings spent rooting for the home team. For the last few years, fans in Seattle have brought these lyrics to the fanfare and fly balls of Safeco Field, a magnificent mix of conceptual dynamics and architectural grandeur--and the subject of this year's ninth annual Seattle Ornament™.
Considered by many to be the quintessential stadium in the world of professional athletics today, Safeco Field, dedicated on July 5, 1999, offers something for everyone. Nestled within the embrace of its brick and concrete rotunda rest the elements of a baseball fan's dream come true. As homage to days gone by, the sweeping grandstands are filled with rows of green, shiny seats embossed with the likeness of legendary Seattle hurler Fred Hutchinson. The modern marvel of rollback rooftops ensures the perfect backdrop for any game or event, no matter what the circumstance. Scores of elegant suites provide pleasures of great viewing and good camaraderie. Indeed, Mariner fans of all ages are able to cheer on their favorite players while enjoying both traditional, time-honored elements and current-day comforts and conveniences.
Ah, the beloved Mariners...those marvelous men in black and white who worded magic for their loyal devotees, none more dedicated than the citizens of Seattle and supporters from throughout the Northwest and beyond. As they step from their red cedar dugout onto the field of natural green grass, the players listen and watch as the crowd goes wild, the umpire gives the "Play ball!" sign, and the splendor and spectacle of the game begins. Let me root, root, root for the home team? You bet. Or the many role-players who worked so diligently to make Safeco Field a reality--as well as the athletes and fans that keep it alive--the thrill of the game is what counts. And to be able to play it within the ultimate playground? Well, that's like being in the bottom of the ninth, down by three, bases loaded, two outs, three-two count--and the batter steps up and hits that magical grand slam. It just doesn't get any better than that. And that, in essence, is what Safeco Field is all about.
